Carstensz Pyramid, also known as Puncak Jaya, is the highest peak in Oceania, standing at 4,884 meters (16,024 feet) above sea level. It is located in the Papua province of Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. Carstensz Pyramid is part of the Maoke Mountains and is famous for its dramatic vertical walls and sharp, jagged appearance.
The mountain is notable for being one of the Seven Summits, which refers to the highest peaks on each of the seven continents, making it a sought-after challenge for mountaineers. Despite being in a tropical region, Carstensz Pyramid is covered in glaciers at its summit, although they are rapidly receding due to climate change.
Carstensz Pyramid was first successfully climbed in 1962 by an Australian expedition, and the climb remains a technical challenge due to its steep, rocky terrain and unpredictable weather. The mountain is located in a remote and rugged area, requiring climbers to navigate dense jungle and potentially dangerous conditions to reach the base before beginning their ascent.
In addition to its climbing allure, Carstensz Pyramid holds cultural significance for the indigenous people of the region.
